Selecting a metal-cased oil seal requires careful consideration of its operating environment so that it can effectively prevent liquid or gas leakage and support reliable equipment operation. The following guide explains the key environmental factors.
I. Temperature compatibility
1. Temperature range: Metal-cased oil seals can generally operate across a broad temperature range, depending on the material. Nitrile rubber (NBR), for example, typically operates from -40°C to 100°C, while fluoroelastomer (FPM) can operate from -30°C to 200°C or higher. Select the material according to the actual operating temperature of the equipment.
2. High-temperature design: Equipment operating at elevated temperatures should use seals made from heat-resistant materials such as fluoroelastomer or silicone rubber. These materials retain effective sealing performance under high-temperature conditions.
II. Pressure compatibility
1. Pressure range: The pressure capacity of a metal-cased oil seal varies with its material and construction. Conventional designs may handle pressures around 10 MPa. For higher-pressure environments, use a pressure-resistant seal or a custom design.
2. Pressure stability: Under high pressure, sealing performance must remain stable to prevent leakage caused by pressure fluctuations. Pressure resistance and stability should therefore be considered during selection.
III. Media compatibility
1. Media type: The seal material must be compatible with the medium it contacts to prevent degradation or failure. Common liquid media include industrial oils and emulsions, while gaseous media include air, nitrogen, and inert gases. Identify the medium and select a compatible material.
2. Corrosion resistance: Equipment exposed to corrosive media should use corrosion-resistant seals. Fluoroelastomers, for example, resist attack from many chemicals.
IV. Vibration and shock compatibility
1. Anti-vibration design: Mechanical equipment often experiences substantial vibration and shock, placing higher demands on sealing performance. Choose a design that maintains a stable seal under complex operating conditions.
2. Durability: Vibration and shock can accelerate wear and shorten seal life. Durability and wear resistance should be evaluated to support long-term stable operation.
V. Other factors
1. Dimensional fit: The seal dimensions must match the shaft diameter and installation space. Measure the shaft and housing carefully, and verify the inner diameter, outer diameter, and height before selection.
2. Brand and quality: Products from established manufacturers provide better assurance that materials, processes, and quality are rigorously controlled, supporting dependable performance.
3. After-sales service: Strong service and warranty support provide additional protection. Review the manufacturer’s service scope and warranty terms so that problems can be resolved promptly.
In summary, selecting a metal-cased oil seal requires a comprehensive review of temperature, pressure, media, vibration, shock, and other operating factors. The right material, structure, and dimensions—together with dependable quality and support—help ensure reliable equipment operation and longer service life.
